Why Faux Greenery Is a Budget-Friendly Holiday Hero

It suddenly dawned me that I haven’t shared one of my rockstar holiday hacks with you!

One of my favorite seasonal accents to add to my home each Christmas season is artificial greenery. It is a great addition to any artificial garland or artificial wreath.

Artificial greenery lasts for years, and it doesn’t drop needles all over your floors.

But the real magic? You can easily layer, tweak, and reuse it in different ways every season.

Here’s how I stretch my decorating dollar:

  • I reuse the same garlands, wreaths, and stems every year.
  • layer inexpensive sprigs into plain garlands to make them look lush.
  • I mix in pinecones, bells, ribbons, and real clippings for extra charm.

My Favorite Ways to Use Faux Greenery

Style Your Mantel with Layers

Your fireplace is a natural focal point.

I start with a basic garland (often on sale post-season), then tuck in cedar stems, pinecones, or berries to add fullness and variety.

Tip: Fluff your garland and angle the tips slightly downward — it softens the look beautifully.

Fill Vases and Bowls Instead of Flowers

Skip the pricey floral arrangements.

I love to fill thrifted pitchers, vases, and even dough bowls with faux cedar or pine stems.

It’s effortless and instantly cozy.

Dress Your Dining Table Without Buying a Centerpiece

I did that to our faux garlands that I used in our dining room.

These artificial pine garlands needed something more, so some pine cones and sprigs of cedar were the perfect addition to add the feel of natural elements to the room.

Lay a faux pine garland down your table and nestle a few candles or ornaments into it.

It feels intentional and festive, without the expense.

Add Greenery in Unexpected Places

It’s simple to do and always ups the decor without making your home look overwhelming or competing with the other holiday decoration displays.

Try a few sprigs on your coffee table tray, entry bench, or even on your mailbox (just be sure to secure it well if it’s outdoors!).

I once decorated a wooden ladder with garlands and stems as a make-shift tree — and got so many compliments!

Frequently Asked Questions

What else can I decorate with faux greenery?

Let your imagination go wild!

Try your headboard, kitchen shelves, light fixtures, mirrors, or your staircase railing. I even tuck stems into wrapped presents for a charming touch.

Where’s the best place to buy it?

You can usually find greenery stems anywhere you can purchase an artificial Christmas tree, with the exception of hardware stores.

Craft stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels have an entire section where you can purchase faux plants. Once they start rolling out the holiday decor, look for the beautiful Christmas greenery.

Don’t skip Target or Walmart – especially in the early season. They are usually mixed in with the other Christmas decorations.

And after-Christmas sales are your best friend for stocking up affordably.

Can I mix real greenery with faux?

Absolutely! The one thing that is always missing from faux greenery is that fresh scent of pine needles.

One tip to score greenery on the cheap is to head to your Christmas tree lot, or wherever they sell Christmas trees. Just ask for the clippings!

Most of the time, you can get the branches they trim off the bottom for free!

Here are some tips for adding real greenery to your home:

  • Use fresh garland, but if you are decorating early, the real stuff doesn’t last long. You can try this faux cedar garland which I love!
  • Add some clear lights to enhance the smell. When the lights warm the branch tips- it smells great. But again – the real deal doesn’t last long!
