If you’ve been following along with me for a while, then you know I love all things vintage – especially when they come with a great story.

A story that you can retell again and again.

This piece – this classic hutch is one with a story to tell – complete with a testament of true love.

When we were first given this hutch, it was in it’s somewhat original state.

It came from my sister’s in laws house, where it had sat for decades in her kitchen. Scribble marks, marker remnants showed a used and well-loved piece.

But that’s not the story.

One day, many years ago, a distant family member of my husband, his great aunt and uncle to be exact – were out on a Sunday drive.

I don’t know if it was a Sunday, but in my mind’s story, I’ve filled in the blanks and made it the day of all leisurely drives – a Sunday.

Anyway – on this Sunday drive, they pass a house that had this hutch on their front porch.

The wife oohs and ahhs over it the whole rest of the way home.

What transpired next will forever be unknown, but the sweet husband set off in the car again, back to that house to ask if it were for sale.

Maybe his wife pleaded with him to go get it. Maybe it was her birthday and he wanted to surprise her.

Whatever the story, it had to be love that made him approach a stranger’s door and ask to buy something from them.

So it sat in their house until my sister in law inherited it.

That time I almost turned into Mommy Dearest: parenting is tough, but you have to learn to laugh, roll with the punches, and not miss the story

Marks show where someone tried to pry it unstuck.

Dings, knicks and scratches show that it was touched almost everyday.

So, a while back, I gave it an update. The knotty pine had started to yellow – probably from the old and aging shellac. I gave the hutch an update in a beautiful deep blue.

Inspired by that pretty scalloped blue dish, I loved this new inception.

But if you’ve been following along with me a while, then you also know that I love to swap things up.

This blue beauty worked great in our Almost Farmhouse, but here at Meadow Brook, it was calling to me.

It said it needed an new coat of paint. Well, the hutch didn’t say it – the scratches from moving the hutch did.

So here’s this beautiful piece now.

  1. What an incredible story behind this hutch! I love that’s passed from generation to generation and that has such a great tradition, much like the artistry behind Sukhi rugs. Deep blue looked good, but I prefer the color you went after this time, mainly because it goes so well with your tarnished silver. They complement each other perfectly. Thank you for sharing this story!
