Quick and Easy Framed Shiplap

Sometimes simplicity is the way to go. I needed some artwork for our bedroom and this quick and easy framed shiplap was the way to go!

I can’t believe it’s been six months since we were working on this room.

And now we’re embarking on the rest of the bedrooms, but more on that later.

So today, I wanted to share an easy DIY for you using an old frame and some leftover laminate flooring.

It was such an easy project and I love the statement piece it made!

Laminate Flooring Scraps

It all started with this old frame.

Here’s how the story goes.

My in-laws were selling their business and we went to help unload an old storage shed in the back.

This frame was tucked away beneath a pile of junk.

And my brother in law was just about to toss it into the dumpster.

Hearing it cry out to me, I hollered, “Stop!”

I ran over and clutched in my hands and gingerly placed it in my trunk.

Doesn’t that sound dramatic.

I do have a tendency to over-flourish my stories.

I’m pretty confident it went like this:

‘Hey, you want this?”

“Sure!”

Any whey… it was sitting in my garage for months and I wanted to try something fun with this frame.

So I started with basic white craft paint.

I loved the carved detail, so I made sure not to paint that, but went around the outside frame with white.

It was… meh.

So I got out some copper paint to see if I could shine up that carved wood pieces.

It was better, but still needed depth.

So I turned to my trusty antiquing glaze.

It has a bit of a shimmer to it so I thought it might compliment the carved framing.

But first I diluted it with a bit of water.

I loved the darker look, but with antiquing glaze, you are supposed to wipe it off.

And when I did, it was still too bright.

So, I almost chucked the whole project.

But I kept on trying until I found the sweet sauce.

So I took it outside and sprayed some Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint from about 4 feet above.

It left a fun splattery pattern.

While I was doing that, Trent was making the shiplap insert.

Remember my DIY ceiling from my Boys Bathroom?

The previous owners left a box of laminate flooring and we used the underside to create this awesome DIY ceiling.

The way it locks together, it looks like shiplap!

So, we used those scraps and nailed them to the frame.

Wanna see what it looks like?

I weathered the frame a bit with some rough sandpaper to let some of that white underneath show thru.

The wreath is just a hoop wreath with some eucalyptus garland hot glued around it.

Easy peasy, friend!

So the moral of the story is, don’t throw something away. There just might be a fun DIY involved.

Or it may be try and try again until you get it right.

Bottom line, not all DIYs go as planned and sometimes you just gotta wing it!

But just keep DIYing! 😉
