Written On Stone – How to Create Hand Lettered Rocks

Do you ever pick up little treasures when you’re out in nature? Some people collect seashells or teacups. Me? I collect rocks.

Yeah, actual rocks. Is that weird?

Written on Stone: Craft rocks that are easy to make and special ways to celebrate memorable moments.

I’ve always loved how nature grounds me—literally and emotionally. Rocks remind me of where I’ve been and what I’ve overcome.

I even have a favorite song about a rough stone getting smoothed out by life’s storms. Let’s just say…

Without a doubt, I have been that rock in much need of refining.

A few years ago, during a particularly tough season, we went hiking as a family. It was one of those soul-lifting days—exactly what I needed.

That’s when I found it: a heart-shaped rock. Simple, beautiful, and perfectly imperfect.
And I thought, I don’t want to forget this moment.

I love the idea of writing promises on those rocks I collect to remind me of where I was spiritually during that time of my life. It’s a sweet reminder of redemption in dark times as well as the blessings in those good times.

That’s When the Idea Hit Me…

I remembered seeing a DIY project on Pinterest where someone used hand lettered rocks as wedding place cards. It was adorable—but I wanted to take it further.

What if I wrote something meaningful on this rock—like a promise, a verse, or a word that captured that moment?

Suddenly, that little stone became a touchstone. (See what I did there? 😉)

Why Hand Lettered Rocks Make the Perfect Sentimental Gift

There’s something powerful about putting memories into tangible form. These little hand lettered stones can be:

  • reminder of a special day or milestone
  • gift to encourage a friend going through a hard time
  • A beautiful way to express faith, love, or gratitude

And the best part? They’re so simple to make.

What You’ll Need

  • Smooth rocks (collected or store-bought)
  • Permanent markers (fresh ones work best)
  • A little creativity and a quiet afternoon

Pro Tip: Want to do faux calligraphy? Choose a smooth stone and start with a basic outline—then go back and thicken the downstrokes.

How to Make Hand Lettered Rocks (Step-by-Step)

  1. Clean your rocks with water and let them dry completely
  2. Choose your phrase. Think short words or meaningful quotes like “grace,” “be still,” or “you’ve got this.”
  3. Sketch lightly with a pencil if you want a guide.
  4. Start lettering using your permanent marker. Simple print or cursive – whatever suits your style!
  5. Go over it twice for a bold, chalkboard-style look.
  6. Let it dry fully before handling or placing it outdoors.

A clean tip helps if you plan to use calligraphy, or make artistic embellishments. Be prepared for the marker to wear out so you may want to have a few on hand.

You can find some incredible fonts online for inspiration for your hand lettered rocks. Begin with a simple outline, and you can go back over to create a more chalkboard-ish type of print.

How to Display or Gift Your Hand Lettered Rocks

There are so many sweet ways to use them:

  • Tuck one into a potted plant as a little surprise
  • Line them along your windowsill or garden path
  • Place one next to a framed printable or quote
  • Gift one with a handwritten note—instant meaningful moment

I paired one of mine with a framed quote that says “Abide in Him” printed on an old dictionary page.

It’s such a simple combo, but it makes me smile every time I see it.

  1. I love these, and it would work for the beach-combing shell collectors as well (although it is easier to write on the inside of the shells). I find rocks and shells at many client's homes, because it IS fun to collect them and the memories they represent. We often put them in the garden, or in a clear vase. So cute! (visiting from BragAboutIt)

  2. I've collected rocks since I was a very small girl. I have a nice collection of heart shaped rocks that I display on my front porch by the door. Most of mine are in my garden…used to decorate planters & fairy gardens. I live on a little lake that has lots of fossils on the bank so I have a collection of them that I've gleaned over the years. Some are special because of where they came from.

  3. What a fun idea, Jen! I love the way these darling stones look on your table tray. So cute!

  4. This is such a great idea, I am thinking of starting a jar of these. I think it would be a great little decor addition to add to a mantel or a bookcase. It is a conversation starter, too, isn't it? I would love it if you would stop by and share this at the Celebrate Your Story! link party. 5. Oh such a lovely idea! I have a few white rocks that need transforming. Thank you so very much for joining us at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

  6. This is a neat idea, Jen. I used to have a faux rock that I paid pretty money for..I think it said "blessed" on it. Over time the rock changed colors and went away. I was just wondering how to do this on the real thing! Thanks 🙂

So glad you joined Thoughts of Home on Thursday.
