Have you ever wondered what income looks like for a blogger? Here is a Real Life Blogging Income Report from a diy/home blogger with what we are making this Month. Affiliate links are provided for your convenience.
Ever feel like that? Where a sigh is just about the sum of all your feelings? Yeah…that was this past month, but with a huge helping of relief.
Get ready for a whole lot of real life – no holds barred – from this blogger.
Just four days after I posted last month’s Real Life Blogging Income Report, we got some upsetting news. My husband, who is a contributing writer for another website, learned that his blog was shutting down. In 2 days…
that door closed.
Boy, if that’s not a kick in the hind quarters to get your rear in gear to work harder! But in the midst of living in this unknown, something amazing has happened –
This entire event has not only brought us closer to our Lord, but also closer to each other.
When Trent got the news, he instantly made calls to his back up plan people. Call after call, each door closed. Instead of frustration and hopelessness stepping in, I saw a change in my husband. You see, he wasn’t fond of his writing gig. Year after year, I slowly saw the joy leaving his face. Suddenly – even though he was dealing with being fired – I began to notice the man I fell in love with return – not knowing he was gone until that joy came back.
And while God was closing the doors of those opportunities, He sweetly stepped in and gave us a reminder of a promise we made to each other years ago.
When we were in our blossoming relationship, planning our marriage, and getting ready to take on this thing called life together, with hearts in our eyes, we made the proclamation,
“I just want to be with you all the time. Work together, make music together, be in each other’s presence as much as humanly possible!”
Yes, that was young romance talking, and we have been blessed to have been able to do much of that by working from home, but not always working side by side. A seed was planted that day that we truly believe the Lord is bringing to light in the midst of this mess.
Beauty in the blemishes, right?
But it doesn’t stop there. I was also reminded of why I started my blog.
Noting Grace – a nod to my singer’s heart with a turn of the musical phrase ‘grace note.’
Noticing Grace – not just in a forgotten chair on the side of the road desperately wanting to be loved back to life, but noticing grace when we need it most. In the midst of messes – during those frantic holiday seasons or forgotten dinners – when life hurts too much to go on.
The purpose was to Notice and Note Grace during those rough seasons of life’s ups and downs. To encourage you – fellow mom, friend, blogger – who may be feeling less than or discouraged.
I wanted this blog to be a soft place to land – a safe place to come to find inspiration and encouragement.
Somewhere along the way, I lost sight of that. I’m blessed for that reminder!
So we started a plan to build this blog as a business – together – and I couldn’t be more over-the-moon excited!
On a side note: Trent does have promise of a job on the horizon with the same company, but our prayer is that this blog will support our family.
But what about income and paying our bills and school tuition and feeding my 6’5″ fourteen year old boy?
We are exercising our faith and trusting in Him to give us the desires of our hearts. I don’t know what that looks like, or how this will unfold, but I have the joy of having front row seats to some amazing work ahead!
Our game plan this past month was for Trent to get up to speed on all things Noting Grace and that brought us to some blog education courses that have helped me. By investing in your business – you are also investing in yourself which can only help you to grow.
There are tons of blogging courses out there that can fit your financial circumstances.
Only open once a year, this blog camp is one of the most expensive options out there, but so worth the investment seeing how exhaustive the course is. We enrolled for the first time this year, so I will give you our full review once we complete the course.
This is run by Gina Luker from The Shabby Creek Cottage and is much more affordable and is offered multiple times a year. It is a 3 day intensive workshop that helps you to look hard at your blog and where you need to work and improve.
There are a few more courses that I have taken, but they are no longer offered. If you do a bit of research, and join a few blogging Facebook groups, you can quickly network to find courses out there.
And if you are a cheapy like me, you can take an afternoon and search a specific topic you are struggling with and find some awesome tips for free! I’ve pinned a bunch on my Pinterest Blog Board.
So now onto the numbers!
I wish they were more given our current situation, but I’m slowly continuing to see growth in more ways than one!
Real Life Blogging Income Report – March
Since pay periods vary based on either time or amount, I separate out my report into income earned versus income paid.
Ad Networks (google Adsense and Content.ad)$106.96
Affiliate Earnings $158.13
Total Earned: $265.09
Ad Networks $281.25
Affiliate Earnings $103.60
Total Earned: $384.85
Decor Purchases for Blog Hops: $59.48
Domain Name re-up: $36 for 3 years
Equipment for upcoming DIY: $404.23 (OUCH!)
Total Spent: $499.71
Total Profit: -$114.86
The equipment purchase (a pressure washer) was a necessity for a few outdoor projects we have coming up (painting the house sponsored post, deck resurfacing, etc.) Without that doozy of a purchase, we would have had a nice profit this month. But that is real life and how business works sometimes.
We are forging forward in faith and holding close to this promise:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. Isaiah 55:8
