When renovating our house, your budget can be really tight. Right now, we don’t have the financial wiggle room to create a “decorating fund.” Here is a creative DIY tip to update your decor without having to foot the expense of rematting frames with this Scrapbook Paper Photo Mat tutorial.
Years ago, I purchased 4 frames with prints from a garage sale for less than a buck.
The original green mat worked fine in with my decor in our Vegas house so I updated it by spray painted the frame black and making custom artwork.
I took old sheet music with markings from my days as a student and added the embellishments with keys.
The green mats worked great in our old house, but when we moved to our Almost Farmhouse, they didn’t work with our updated color scheme.
This Tennessee house we’ve moved into needs a lot of remodeling. That means I didn’t have extra money to have the frames rematted.
So here’s how I did it! Let’s start with the supplies.

Sticking to our tight budget, I looked through my scrapbooking paper for ideas. I found this velour damask paper and loved how it looked with the keys.
It’s a simple DIY – glue the scrapbook paper to the old photo mat.
Then using a sharp knife, like an exacto knife, trim away the excess paper!
Easy peasy and so cheapy!
The scrapbook paper photo mat now matched our light gray walls.
Budget friendly, super easy and now a standout piece in my dining room! This is an easy way to update your decor and create a custom look for any room!
