Have you ever tried DIY Mixed Media Artwork? Inspired by a painting but turned off by the price tag, we made our own artwork for a fraction of the cost!
Just look at this amazing piece of art!
I discovered a brilliant artist on Olioboard. His name is Dolan Geiman and I love his contemporary artwork using different mediums. This piece is called “Perched Bird Art Print on Paper, Bluebird.” I found his reprints on overstock, but still the price was too steep for me.
And, on my shoestring budget, I couldn’t afford the print I wanted SO bad. Here’s how I made my own DIY Mixed Media Artwork at a fraction of the cost!
Since it was still unaffordable and no longer available, I hoped to recreate what he captured so beautifully.
Here’s how it did it!
DIY Mixed Media Artwork
I went through some old pictures I had. I found an old Parisian print I had for years that I purchased on clearance for $8. It was poster on thin MDF type wood with a frame.
I couldn’t wait to try recreating this! Here’s how it turned out.
To begin, I first painted over the Parisian building with some watered down oops paint we had on hand. I left it sheer so that the buildings barely shown in my attempt to mimic his painting knife strokes (called impasto).
Next, I cut left over sheet music and scrap paper to create the tree. It was so fun carving the trunk and branches with the scissors!
Then, I mod podge’d the paper over the brown paint.
Changing the word Bluebird to a Sparrow, I personalized this piece as a reminder of my favorite verses that means a lot to me.
After that, I finger painted the word ‘Sparrow’ and I used blue to tie in my other decor.
I love that I was able to recreate something that inspired me and add my own twist to it to make it more personal to me.
Thank you Mr. Geiman, for inspiring me!
And I hope this inspired you to make some DIY Mixed Media Artwork of your own!
